Wedding Season: Hen And Stag Nights, After-Parties And Meeting The Two Families
Three kinds of party around a year-end wedding: the hen or stag night, the after-party, and the gathering of the two families. Size, timing and the right room at Avatar Karaoke, District 1.
From November through the end of January, the wedding calendar in Ho Chi Minh City fills up noticeably. But a wedding is not only the main reception — three other occasions surround it, each needing its own arrangement. Confusing the three is why so many groups end up with the wrong room, the wrong hour, or the wrong mood.

Three kinds of party, three different purposes
| Occasion | Who comes | Who usually pays | The right mood |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hen or stag night | The bride's or groom's close friends, 6–12 people | Split among the friends, sometimes hosted by the bride or groom | Warm, private, plenty of photographs, no formality needed |
| After-party | Close friends and colleagues of the couple, 10–20 people | The newly married couple, as a private thank-you | Relaxed, fewer formalities than the reception, more conversation |
| The two families meeting | Relatives from both sides, several generations, 15–30 people | Both families, usually split by prior agreement | Moderately formal, with speeches, comfortable for older guests |
The hen or stag night: a private room rather than a crowded bar
In wedding season the bars and eating houses in the centre are usually full at weekends. A private room solves three problems at once: no waiting for a table, no listening to another group's music, and far better space for photographs than a corner table outside. For a group of 8 to 12, Moonlight (12 guests, 40 m²) is a sensible choice — its moonlit, softly lit tone was designed for occasions worth remembering, and suits the mood of an evening before the big day.
The after-party: keep it easy, do not repeat the reception
The common mistake with an after-party is trying to reproduce the formality of the reception — long speeches, the pouring ceremony, a host with a microphone. It should be the opposite: short, without a fixed script, so that the couple and their closest friends actually get to talk after a long day of formalities. For a group of 15 to 20, Aurora (room 0A1, 20 guests, 60 m²) suits well: it is on the ground floor, spacious without losing the privacy of a group who all know each other.

The two families meeting: what to watch when older guests are there
This occasion is quite unlike the other two, because several generations are sitting together. A few things to keep in mind:
- Choose a room large enough on the rule of roughly 2 m² per person, so nobody is squeezed in
- Keep the background music moderate for the first part of the evening, so the two families can hear each other talk
- The dining area should be well lit; avoid rooms with strong flashing effects running throughout
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes at the start for the introductions between the two families, then move on to the meal
- Free parking with space for cars — which matters when older relatives are coming
For 15 to 30 people across several generations, the room and set-menu approach in the company party packages applies just as well to a large family party, or look up the floor area of each room directly at the VIP room list.
How far ahead to book in wedding season
From November through January, weekend slots — Friday and Saturday evenings especially — are taken earlier than usual because they coincide with wedding season. For a hen night or after-party under 12 people, three to five days ahead usually still leaves a choice of rooms. For a larger family gathering, book at least a week ahead, particularly if it falls on a weekend or near other holidays in the same period. Groups that can be flexible about the day of the week generally have more rooms to choose from and do not have to change plans at the last minute.
Who should do the booking
For a hen or stag night, one friend usually settles the date and books on behalf of everyone, then splits the cost per head. For an after-party, the couple normally decide, since it is their private thank-you. For the two families meeting, one representative from each side should confirm the guest numbers before the room is booked, so that one side does not add people at the last minute and leave the room short.
A booking checklist for all three
- Decide which occasion it is — hen night, after-party, or the two families meeting — since each needs a different room and hour
- Settle the real guest count; do not over-estimate far beyond the room's capacity
- Book at least three to five days ahead in wedding season; weekends fill earlier than weekdays
- If older relatives are attending, say so in advance so the lighting and volume can be set appropriately
- Confirm a clear start and finish time when booking, rather than letting the party drift into the small hours
The three occasions around a wedding do not need to resemble each other — each only needs to suit the people who are there.
