Two Offers, One Choice: The Rule Fits In A Single Line

The venue runs two discounts, both acting on the room rate, and you may take only one:

The birthday age discount — a percentage equal to the birthday guest's age.

The time-slot offer — 30% off the room rate, 12pm to 10pm, Sunday to Thursday.

Since both are percentages of the same amount, choosing needs no arithmetic: compare the birthday age with 30.

Under 30: take the time-slot offer

A birthday guest of 26, a group of 35, a room at 750,000đ per hour, four hours — 3,000,000đ before any discount.

The birthday discount takes off 26%, or 780,000đ. The time-slot offer takes off 30%, or 900,000đ.

A difference of 120,000đ in favour of the time-slot offer. The condition attached is that the party has to sit between 12pm and 10pm, Sunday to Thursday.

Exactly 30: the two are equal

At thirty, 30% from the birthday discount is exactly 30% from the time-slot offer. Choose on something else: whichever day suits the group.

If the group is only free on a Saturday night, take the birthday discount — it carries no day or time restriction. If you are meeting on a Sunday afternoon, take the time-slot offer and save the birthday reason for another visit.

Over 30: take the birthday discount, and the gap widens

A birthday guest of 50, a group of 20, a room at 500,000đ per hour, four hours — 2,000,000đ before any discount.

The birthday discount takes off 50%, or 1,000,000đ. The time-slot offer takes off 30%, or 600,000đ.

A difference of 400,000đ in favour of the birthday discount. And because the discount tracks the age, the gap only widens: sixty is 60% against 30%, seventy is 70% against 30%.

Why the venue says this out loud

A group of 26-year-olds could perfectly well be sold the birthday discount without anyone noticing they had just lost 120,000đ. But a guest who is advised correctly comes back, and a guest who works it out afterwards does not.
