CHOOSING A VENUE

Four things to ask before you pay a deposit anywhere

This is not a sales page. It is a set of questions for scoring any venue — including this one. If the place you are looking at can answer all four, it is worth booking.

Ask for square metres, not headcountThe working rule for a party is 2m² per person, because people stand up to speak and move around rather than sitting still. If a venue can only give you a headcount and not an area, treat that number as marketing.
One room, or two joined together?Joined rooms with a partition tend to leak sound and split the atmosphere in two — the group never feels like one group. Ask it directly.
Ask for written booking confirmationDate, time, room, capacity, menu, estimated total, cancellation terms. A venue that can send all of that before you transfer a deposit is a venue with a process.
How fast does a quote come back?An indirect signal, but a very accurate one about how the place is run. A venue that takes two days to send a quote is the same one that takes two hours to get a dish to the table.
